Local Government Reforms Welcomed but Execution Will Be Key

Chambers Ireland has today (16/10/12) welcomed the Action Programme for Effective Local Government which will create a more self-reliant and efficient Local Government system.

Speaking this afternoon, Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive, said “the reduction in the number of Local Authorities from 114 to 31 is to be welcomed as a step towards increased efficiencies which will generate much needed savings. In this context, it is important that the new Local Enterprise Offices, which will provide supports to SMEs in each Local Authority, must focus on their core remit with no mission creep beyond the service level agreements to be signed with Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation.”

“The announcement of enhanced Strategic Policy Committees (SPC), along with a new SPC for Enterprise and Economic Development, highlights an important focus on economic growth and job creation. In order to ensure the best possible outcomes, it is vital that a greater number of business representatives are involved.”

“At present, with €850 million in savings and a 23% reduction in staff, the Local Government system has made the biggest contribution to cost savings in the public service. It is now time that the rest of the public service follow suit, which will only be possible through further delivery on the Croke Park Agreement,” he concluded.
