Local Government Awards Open For 2022
Chambers Ireland, the voice of business throughout Ireland today (1st April) opens applications for this year’s Local Government Awards.
The Awards are held annually in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and today’s launch invites Local Authorities to submit projects for consideration across a broad range of categories.
In 2021, Cork City Council was named Local Authority of the Year.
Commenting on the announcement of the launch, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland said,
“This nineteenth edition of the awards is a great opportunity for Local Authorities across the country to profile nationally the often extraordinary yet also vital, constant work that happens across local communities every day. Today we invite Local Authorities to share their best initiatives with us so that they can be celebrated, highlighted and replicated.
We are also introducing three exciting new categories in the 2022 awards to reflect the changing nature of local government. Firstly, the Communications award category which reflects the efforts by every Local Authority to engage their stakeholders and the wider public and we look forward to seeing the innovative applications which we expect to be brought forward in this area. The second new category is for Climate Action which highlights the crucial role local authorities will have in tackling climate change. We have also introduced a Diversity & Inclusion category which will highlight the civic work by local authorities to include all citizens, such as their response in accepting refugees as a result of the war in the Ukraine.”
As the application process opens, Minister of State for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Peter Burke, TD stated, “I am delighted that my Department is in a position to once again support these awards, which are an excellent opportunity to showcase the extent to which local authorities are core to their communities all over the country. I welcome in particular the new category of Diversity and Inclusion and look forward to seeing the varied applications in this category. We must continue to work hard to ensure local government is reflective of today’s diverse society, and local authorities are well-placed within communities to ensure all citizens feel included and can play a valuable part in the future of their locality”.
He added “These awards get the message out to the wider public about the good work local authorities are doing, often below the radar, and we look forward to recognising this valuable work in an official way at the awards ceremony in the Autumn”.
The Excellence in Local Government Award winners will be announced at the 19th annual awards ceremony on 24th November at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Northwood, Santry. Awards will be presented for excellence in various different categories and one Local Authority will be awarded the overall award and named Local Authority of the Year 2022.
