Irish Water Has Opportunity to Support Business

Chambers Ireland has today (27/03/14) said that Irish Water must meet the needs of business through equitable charges and quality of supply. The call came at the 3rd Annual Water Ireland Conference at which Chambers Ireland Chief Executive Ian Talbot gave a presentation on Water and Business: Impact and Opportunities.

Speaking at the conference, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive Ian Talbot said “The transfer of responsibility from local authorities to Irish Water provides a unique opportunity to support business. A sustainably funded body that guarantees fair and equitable pricing for both business and domestic users will be of benefit to all. We need to ensure that the local economy is supported through cost containment, strategic investment in infrastructure and cost savings being passed back to business through a reduction in commercial rates. To ensure this happens, State funding must still be available to guarantee capital investment and appropriate infrastructure.”

“The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) can also support business through its role as regulator of Irish Water. Water services for business must be priced at a level that supports business and employment. CER can also support SMEs by mandating Irish water to purchase goods and services at a price which reflects long term value to the economy rather than simply choosing the cheapest option.” 

“A quality, reliable and cost effective supply will not only support local business; it is a key factor for attracting Foreign Direct Investment which will further support economic development and job creation,” he concluded.
