Chambers Ireland welcomes nomination of Michael McGrath as European Commissioner designate

Chambers Ireland welcomes the nomination of Michael McGrath as the EU’s next Commissioner for Justice and the Rule of Law.

Speaking today, (17 September 2024) Chief Executive Ian Talbot wished the Commissioner designate well and urged him to consider the needs of business in his new role:

‘This portfolio will be crucial to our competitiveness for this mandate and beyond. We need a strong Single Market that promotes stable regulatory environments and facilitates cross-border trade by enforcing consistent legal standards across member states. This will foster confidence across the business community and support our economic growth.’

Talbot continued:

‘Mr McGrath has been very supportive of our network of Chambers across the country during his time as Minister for Finance and we look forward to continued engagement with him in his new role.’

Regarding progress made by the last Commission, Talbot said:

‘It is critical that the progress made by the last Commission continues at full steam ahead, which includes progressing the Free Trade Agenda and continued development of the Single Market, particularly making both more accessible for indigenous Irish businesses. We are also asking the next Commission to advance the Capital Markets Union (CMU) and the Banking Union as a matter of urgency. These are vital instruments for providing businesses with better access to financing and will be essential for financial stability.’
