Chambers Ireland welcomes Mercosur Agreement

[Friday 06 December, 2024]

Earlier today, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive Ian Talbot acknowledged the successful conclusion of the Mercosur trade agreement as marking a significant milestone in strengthening economic ties between the EU and key South American markets.

Talbot said:

“This agreement has been under negotiation for over two decades and it’s high time that progress has been made. Today is a positive step in the right direction.”

“We’ve seen how transformative free trade has been for the Irish economy. We are confident this reflects a shared commitment to fostering international cooperation, sustainable growth and mutual prosperity.”

While the Mercosur agreement brings the promise of expanded opportunities for a variety of industries, Talbot recognised the importance of ensuring balanced benefits for all stakeholders, including the agricultural sector which remains a cornerstone of our indigenous economy.

Talbot continued:

“Free trade opens doors and unlocks opportunities. It creates new opportunities for businesses, while emphasising commitments to sustainability, fair competition and an adherence to EU standards.”

“We are confident that steps will be taken to safeguard European standards of quality, environmental protection, and competitiveness, ensuring that these values are not compromised as the agreement is implemented.”
