Importance of Irish Trade Must be Recognised as Latest Round of TTIP Negotiations Begin

Vital to Broaden our Markets to Mitigate Risks of Overdependence

Chambers Ireland today (22 February 2016) welcomed the start of the 12th round of TTIP negotiations commencing in Brussels.

Speaking today, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive, Chambers Ireland said: “International trade and investment have never been more important for the Irish and European economy. Throughout the recession, our exports helped stabilise the economy when domestic demand remained weak. Our manifesto for General Election 2016, ‘A Vision for 2021’, recognises that Ireland must continue to support the development of an ambitious trade agenda that will open new markets to Irish business. TTIP is only part of this process along with proposed treaties with the ASEAN countries and the CETA agreement with Canada, which is currently awaiting EU approval.

“We are calling on all parties and candidates in this election to acknowledge the important role of Irish trade and exports to our future economic growth. We welcome the ongoing negotiation of a Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership as the potential opportunities for Irish businesses are significant. Increasing access to new markets around the world will be vital for Ireland’s economic growth in years to come and vital for Ireland’s SMEs. Supporting modern trade deals with a range of developed and developing economies is even more important when considered in the context of uncertainties which will continue to arise in international markets, such as the potential for a Brexit. In order to maximise the benefits from increasing Ireland’s access to international markets the next Government must do more to support our SMEs in becoming more internationally focused and capable of exporting their products abroad.”
