New funding agreement to improve quality and affordability of childcare

Speaking after the announcement, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive of Chambers Ireland, strongly welcomed the new funding agreement for the early learning and childcare sector in Ireland by saying:

“It is important that we support early learning and childcare providers with clear and sufficient funding and strong policies. Today’s announcement is a welcome step in the right direction for the sector and for families across Ireland.

The education, care and support of children across the country demands the highest standards of childcare and early learning. The sector can only achieve this if it is adequately resourced through financial backing, quality training for employees and clear guidelines and standards of care.

Access and affordability of childcare are also key barriers that can hold people back from the workforce. As we hear more and more about talent shortages and issues with recruitment and retention, it is more important than ever to be inclusive and flexible in meeting the needs of parents. For many, the cost and insufficient supply of quality childcare can result in a decision to step back from the workforce and this can further exacerbate the national skills shortages.

The announcement today creates more security for the sector and, as a result, should give more parents’ confidence in and access to a system that works for their needs and the needs of their families.”
