Mediation Scheme for Business and Commercial Disputes Launched

Chambers Ireland yesterday (8/10/2015) officially launched the “Business and Commercial Mediation Scheme” at the Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin. The Scheme, which is operated in conjunction with the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the Law Society, the Bar Council of Ireland and the Mediator’s Institute of Ireland, will operate on a pilot basis until July 2016, with the objective of promoting mediation as a cost and resource efficient way for businesses to resolve commercial disputes.

Speaking at the launch, Mark O’Mahoney, Director of Policy and Communications, Chambers Ireland, noted “It has been our experience that mediation is not used as frequently amongst the Irish business community as it could be, particularly amongst small and medium sized enterprises. Research and best practice has shown that mediation, when used to resolve business disputes, helps preserve business relationships, encourages dialogue between disputing parties, and most importantly helps to resolve disputes in an efficient and cost effective way.”

“These benefits will help Irish businesses to save time and money and ultimately supports their competitiveness. The motivation behind the Scheme is to encourage more Irish businesses to consider using mediation when disputes may arise. This Scheme is a good example of the business community and the legal and alternative dispute resolution communities cooperating to support Irish businesses.
