Chambers Ireland Calls for Proactive AI Approach to Boost Competitiveness

Chambers Ireland has responded to the Public Consultation regarding the National Implementation of EU Harmonised Rules on Artificial Intelligence (the AI Act).

Speaking today (17 July) Chief Executive Ian Talbot said:

“Artificial Intelligence is a powerful engine for opportunity which can enhance our competitiveness. To seize that opportunity, a proactive approach by Government is needed to build on the AI Strategy and develop indigenous businesses, while also retaining and attracting Foreign Direct Investment.

In our submission, we urge the Government to build on the National AI Strategy by creating an environment that prioritises skills, provides regulatory certainty for businesses and supports research in AI.

Prioritising skills for AI will be critical if we are to have 75% businesses using AI by 2030. To that end, National Training Fund resources should be directed towards funding future-proofed skills development courses for SMEs.

Businesses will require a regulatory framework that balances responsible use with business practicality. Many companies are approaching regulatory saturation point and navigating the AI Act will be challenging for SMEs especially. A Regulatory Sandbox can offer them a clearer understanding of the regulatory landscape for AI. Equally, appointing a national AI Lead would assist smaller businesses in adopting emerging AI technologies.

A concerted effort is required to effectively transition novel research into commercial use. The Government should expand the research and innovation ecosystem mentioned in the National AI Strategy, encouraging collaboration among researchers, startups, and established companies on innovative projects.

A strategic approach to AI, grounded in these principles, will not only drive economic growth but also promote Ireland’s status as a leader in the global AI landscape.”
