Ireland must maintain Labour Market Flexibility

The University of Limerick has today (3/11/15) published its findings and recommendations on Zero Hours Contracts in an independent report commissioned by Government. The research team found that there is no extensive use of Zero Hour contracts in Ireland, but goes on to make a number of recommendations in relation to the appropriate use of contracts for non-guaranteed hours of work.

Commenting on the report, Ian Talbot, Chief Executive, Chambers Ireland, said “One of the key challenges our economy will face in the coming years is to further reduce our levels of unemployment and to allow access to employment for all those who wish to work. We would be concerned that some of the recommendations proposed in this report are unworkable in practice. The reality is that many jobs in the modern economy are contingent on flexibility of employees and employers. We must ensure that our labour market regulation does not become overly rigid and negatively impact the ability of businesses to create jobs.”
