Government Should Outsource Passport Processing Now

Business Process Outsourcing Can Support Ireland’s Recovery

Chambers Ireland has today (13/02/13) called on the Government to implement business process outsourcing, particularly in areas such as passport processing. The call comes following a presentation made by Chambers Ireland to the Oireachtas Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade outlining how the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade can play a role in Ireland’s recovery.

Speaking this afternoon, Ian Talbot, Chambers Ireland Chief Executive, said “We have always supported business process outsourcing and this could be particularly effective in the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Considerable savings can be made, not only from the wages bill, but also from reduced training costs, lower levels of investment in new technologies and lower consultancy bills, through outsourcing of passport processing. The existing structure cannot cope with demand at peak times and outsourcing this function will provide increased flexibility and efficiency.”

“Outsourcing of non-core activities enables the public service to perform their core, front-line services which includes promoting Ireland as a key trade partner internationally.”

Other issues addressed in the presentation include:

•    Prioritising target countries that are potentially commercially important to Ireland,
•    Clear definition of roles and responsibility among Government Departments, and
•    Using the opportunity of St. Patrick’s Day to support trade.
