elcome to the 2014 special supplement for the Chambers Ireland Corporate Social Responsibility Awards. Chambers Ireland continues to work to promote the benefits and importance of CSR. One of our core goals is to ensure that all companies, large and small, see the value that CSR can bring. Even the smallest company can implement an effective CSR strategy and the high quality of entries to the SME category is a testament to that fact. Our CSR Policy Council works tirelessly to promote CSR activities and to raise awareness amongst the business community on the positive impact having an integrated CSR strategy can bring. The level of commitment shown by Irish businesses to CSR is commendable. It is clear to see that CSR now holds a central place in the Irish business environment and its development is a central function of our network. I applaud all companies shortlisted for this year’s awards.

his time last year, we celebrated the tenth anniversary of the Chambers Ireland CSR Awards. We spoke a lot at the time about how far CSR in Ireland has come in just ten short years. What is even more remarkable is how much can change in just one year. This year saw the awards once again set a new record for number of entrants. A closer look tells us that just under half of this year’s entries were by companies participating in the awards for the first time. This remarkable figure highlights just how quickly CSR continues to grow and why it is so important that these awards recognise the effort and dedication of these companies. It is not just the business community that has recognised the importance of CSR. Earlier this year, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation launched Ireland’s National Plan on Corporate 2

Social Responsibility. Government has come to realise the important role that CSR can play in Ireland’s economic recovery. At the launch, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Richard Bruton T.D. said: “Increasingly, good CSR practices are distinguishing the best companies from their competitors. Customers and prospective employees are more conscious than ever of the ethical record of companies, how they source their products and the contribution they make to the local or national community. In this context, CSR practices that are embedded as a genuine part of a company’s values and operations can help enhance the company’s profile and competitiveness.” It is a sentiment with which John Cunningham, Chair of the CSR Awards judging panel, agrees. “Today’s consumers are not simply looking for

in

CSR

the best deals and quality products. Instead they seek to be more aware of the ethical, environmental, and community-friendly status of a business.” Companies of all shapes and sizes are gearing up and engaging in innovative CSR strategies that demonstrate their commitment to their stakeholders, local communities and the environment. The benefits of CSR projects are not just being realised by the larger companies with a bigger budget, but by

many SMEs as well. As Cunningham notes, “We are particularly proud to see a rise in the number of SME applications. This highlights the fact that our smaller companies are experiencing the tangible benefits that come from their CSR strategies.” “Every year, the judging gets tougher and tougher. Companies are continuously breaking boundaries and coming up with innovative approaches to CSR. We are always keen to dispel the myth that CSR is only

THE PILLARS OF CSR n COMMUNITY Community-based CSR projects, by their nature, are generally the most visible aspects of a company’s CSR activities. The projects depend on direct interaction between the company and the community, generating economic and social vibrancy in the locality. A company builds on this goodwill by using their grassroots knowledge of the issues facing those living in the surrounding area to deliver an effective community-focused CSR strategy. There are many different options open to a company that wants to engage in community-based CSR activities. Community is an always expanding area of CSR, evident in the fact that in recent years we had to divide the community category into three strands – charity, volunteering and community programmes. Community CSR can range from sponsoring a local sports team, fundraising for charity or sharing the skills of your employees with the community. n ENVIRONMENT Environmental and sustainability concerns have been at the forefront of public thinking in recent years. There is a growing awareness of the need to implement policies which enable sustainable development. Environment-based CSR projects go beyond the legislative obligations and promote greener economic growth. These projects may not garner the same amount of publicity as those with a community focus, however, many SMEs find they provide substantial financial benefits as well as improving the firm’s image as an environmentally-aware company. n MARKETPLACE Marketplace CSR involves both a company’s customers and its suppliers. These types of projects are usually away from the public eye but show the willingness of companies to go above and beyond the call of duty when dealing with their stakeholders. Companies have an interest in ensuring that their suppliers provide adequate pay and working conditions, conduct their business in a transparent manner and implement sustainable working practices. For customers, it is important for companies to implement responsible sales and marketing policies and to train their staff on how these policies can be achieved. Marketplace CSR helps businesses to nurture a corporate culture that values the needs, expectations and diversity of its customers.

for big companies with big budgets. It is often the simplest project that catches the judge’s eye. What is important for companies to remember is that a CSR strategy must be something close to the company’s own values and can often be delivered at little or no cost. In fact, if you’re lucky, a CSR strategy might even save money! “I want to commend not only those on the shortlist but all companies that have embraced CSR practices. The type of

dedication and passion that companies display through their CSR policies is vital to Ireland as we seek to build on our recovery. Strong CSR practices help to attract customers and employees and will help distinguish Ireland as a great place to do business.” “We are proud to celebrate and commend the CSR achievements of the Irish business community and we look forward to seeing future developments in the years to come.”

Chambers Ireland | CSR Awards 2014

002 CSR Editorial.indd 3

n WORKPLACE Employees provide the know-how, productivity, customer service and creativity necessary for businesses to thrive. Employers should seek to put in place policies that promote the retention and development of their staff and nurture workplace environments that will attract recruits of the highest calibre. Workplace CSR programmes can affect many different areas of a company’s HR policy such as health and safety, work-life balance of employees, staff diversity and cultural awareness. A healthy balance between the work and non-work aspects of employees’ lives is essential in order to avoid burn out and create a positive and productive working environment. n COMMUNICATION In recent times, communication of CSR initiatives has become more important. While many companies around the country have cross-pillar CSR policies in place, many of their activities may not be known to their wider stakeholders. Effectively communicating their CSR initiatives gives companies the chance to get across their way of thinking and highlight the excellent work they are doing in various areas of CSR.

Paving the Way for a Better Future... BT Ireland is playing an active role in the community through a wide range of voluntary initiatives.

B

T’s Better Future programme is our commitment to use the power of communications to improve lives and ways of doing business without it costing the earth. It’s focused on three main areas: connecting people digitally, making sure BT does more environmental good than harm and providing skills and technology to support good causes. We invest approximately s1.2 million in cash and kind in our Better Future programme, across the island of Ireland. Our people are central to what we do in this area and everyone is encouraged to play an active role in the community through a wide range of volunteering programmes. Every BT person is entitled to three days a year for volunteering and, in the last year alone, staff across the island of Ireland spent 1,860 work days supporting local communities and charitable causes. The 2014 Great BT Charity Shops Challenge will take place on 9th October. The event, which is an all-island fundraiser for the Irish Cancer Society and Marie Curie Cancer Care, is a major volunteering effort by BT staff. Last year’s challenge involved 176

Volunteering is also at the heart of our biggest event – the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition, which celebrated its 50th year last January. This flagship event has been organised and sponsored by BT for 15 years and in 2014 involved over 200 BT volunteers. The exhibition provides a platform for young people from all across the island to come together to investigate scientific theories, discover new technologies and advance current knowledge through innovation. This year’s event was the biggest ever, attracting 2,000 entries and 50,000 visitors.

Elsewhere, our wellestablished Connected Communities initiative helps people in communities across Ireland to get online by providing IT equipment and skills training programmes where they’re most needed. The scheme supports local communities and groups like Employment for People from Immigrant Communities (EPIC), an employment skills programme run by Business in the Community Ireland which has supported almost 1,500 people from 97 countries since its inception. We have also worked with communities in Ringsend, Irishtown and Inchicore in Dublin, as well as Moyross in Limerick.

Being a responsible and sustainable business is more important than ever and reducing its carbon footprint and saving energy by taking simple steps is the focus of BT’s ‘Switch to Saving Energy’ campaign. As part of this scheme, over 460 BT people in Ireland have signed up as energy champions. BT Ireland was also ranked in the top quintile of the 2013 Arena survey – Northern Ireland’s benchmark for environmental management, performance and reporting. This year, we also became one of the very first companies to achieve CORE, the new responsible business standard from Business in the Community NI. It provides a framework for identifying and measuring corporate responsibility activity and performance.

The ‘Fulfilling Lives’ Approach 2014 has proved to be a highly successful year for Eversheds’ CSR programme.

T

he Eversheds approach to CSR goes beyond supporting charity by simply donating funds. As an organisation, we believe it should be about more than that in order to achieve long term impact. That is why we’ve adopted the Eversheds Fulfilling Lives approach. One of the pillars of our CSR programme is enabling our employees to support the local communities in which they operate. All Eversheds employees are encouraged to participate in pro bono initiatives whereby members of the team provide free legal advice to those that need it most in the community. The firm works in partnership with The Bar Council of Ireland’s Voluntary Assistance Scheme and PILA (Public Interest Law Alliance) to ensure our employees can give assistance where it’s needed most. This is an ongoing programme, which we evaluate each year for effectiveness and to identify opportunities for improvement. 2014 has been a highly successful year for Eversheds’ CSR programme, with a diverse range of activities being carried out on behalf of our partner charity organisations.

opportunities. We believe that inspiring these students will be a highly rewarding experience for all those involved.

School Sports Day for Barretstown

Eversheds school sports day for Barretstown

The objective of these partnerships is to leverage the skills of our employees for the benefit of our CSR partners. Our core programme is built around our partnership with Barretstown, the charity founded by the late actor Paul Newman, to provide children suffering from serious illnesses, and their families, with therapeutic recreation. Eversheds has been a corporate partner with Barretstown for over eight years now and has undertaken a number of initiatives to support the charity during that time, including the annual Eversheds Sports Day for Barretstown and sponsorship of the organisation’s 20th anniversary ball in September 2014. In addition, each year, our employees also run ‘Give and Gain Day’, where

the firm opens its doors to the charity sector to provide free legal advice on a chosen day each year. Throughout the rest of the year, Eversheds employees are encouraged to get involved in other charitable endeavours. One of the highlights of 2014 is our new partnership with the Early Learning Initiative (ELI). Education is a significant part of our CSR policy and we are delighted to participate in a programme which was developed to address the problem of educational underachievement in marginalised communities. Our staff volunteer for a number of roles including helping coach disadvantaged students, provide positive role models, mentoring them, motivating them and making them aware of their career and life

For the last four years Eversheds has joined forces with Barretstown to host the annual Eversheds School Sports Day for Barretstown. To date this event has raised approximately F45,000 for the charity. The firm’s long standing partnership with Barretstown has grown over the past eight years and employees seek to offer their skills where they see the most benefit, with significant senior level employee involvement. The Eversheds School Sports Day is the largest fundraising event for Barretstown, and has grown in profile amongst the business community over the past four years. This year, the Eversheds School Sports Day for Barretstown was a fantastic success with 28 teams participating on the day. The teams gathered in Herbert Park on June 5th to compete in a traditional school sports day event with activities such as an egg and spoon race, a three-legged race, wellie throwing and much more.

CSR Profile eircom Group

Building on a Special Partnership As eircom approaches a 30 year milestone of its relationship with Special Olympic Ireland next year, we spoke to eircom’s Carolan Lennon about the benefits of this special partnership.

Carolan Lennon

C

arolan Lennon, Managing Director of eircom Wholesale, has recently assumed eircom Group responsibility for the development and the implementation of eircom’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy. This is not simply an additional role for a busy woman – Lennon has a genuine passion for CSR and fundamentally believes it is important that companies have a clear, meaningful and coherent CSR strategy, delivered by a clear activation plan. This is not just pragmatism on Lennon’s part – although, the eternal pragmatist, she is convinced that in today’s

8

008 CSR 2014_Eircom.indd 8

highly competitive business climate, genuine and engaging CSR is something that can set a company apart. Her view is that while CSR has become something that all stakeholders expect, more importantly having the right CSR strategy that fits the organisation and its values can have a hugely positive impact on a company’s staff – not to mention customers – and this is what she has seen for herself in eircom over the last 12 months. For Lennon, putting a large focus on having a positive impact on society and supporting good causes ensures that eircom plays a strong role in being a good corporate citizen. Lennon has immense experience in

CSR: before joining eircom she served on the board of the Vodafone Ireland Foundation and is currently a member of the Council of Patrons for Special Olympics Ireland. She has led eircom’s relentless drive to achieve unprecedented support for Special Olympics Ireland over the last year. She believes more could, and should, be done and is actively recruiting a CSR manager to support her in developing eircom’s CSR strategy to reach the level of ambition she believes eircom has. eircom’s CSR strategy really fits the organisation – whose job is enabling and facilitating people to do things better and live their lives as easily and simply as possible. eircom is about helping people to connect, using eircom technology in their homes, businesses and communities, and making their lives easier in the process. From a CSR perspective, the central tenet to any initiative eircom is involved in is enabling people to be the best that they can be and to reach their true potential. And everything within the eircom CSR strategy has the Special Olympics Ireland ethos at its core – their very essence is about

helping people realise their potential – so it is the perfect fit. eircom’s relationship with Special Olympics Ireland has been the main focus of the Group’s CSR strategy and, in the last 29 years, eircom’s financial commitment alone has been in the region of d15 million. However, in the last 18 months eircom has also actively supported Dress for Success - an organisation that helps women from disadvantaged areas get back into the workforce. This project is aligned with eircom’s core strategy to help people fulfil their potential and be the best they can be. They hope that the relationship will grow and strengthen in the same way as eircom’s relationship did with Special Olympics Ireland. Commenting on the relationship with Special Olympics Ireland, Lennon said: “Despite the economic backdrop and huge commercial challenges over the last number of years, our relationship with Special Olympics Ireland has remained steadfast, as has our commitment - at a time when all companies are under pressure to curtail or postpone charitable giving. The longevity of the partnership with

Chambers Ireland | CSR Awards 2014

12/09/2014 14:33:58

CSR Profile eircom Group

Special Olympics - and the commitment on both sides - has ensured that this unique relationship between two Irish organisations is stronger than ever.” As they approach the 30 year milestone of their relationship next year, Carolan said: “2014 marks the 29th year of our partnership with Special Olympics Ireland – the longest running charitable partnership in Ireland. It is a relationship that has grown beyond all recognition - developed, strengthened and changed with the times. Approaching our 30 year milestone, the relationship between us has never been stronger. It’s a strategic, long term commitment that is delivering tangible benefits, with activity and results increasing year-on-year. Management and staff of both organisations work seamlessly together every day, in the background, with one clear aim: helping Special Olympics Ireland achieve its mission - by enabling everyone with an intellectual disability in Ireland to participate in a sport of their choice.” Matt English, Managing Director of Special Olympics Ireland, said: “eircom’s long term commitment has been crucial in helping our development. We know we can rely on eircom, thanks to our rolling four-year contracts, which matches Special Olympics Ireland’s four-year Olympic cycle, and enables us to think strategically, plan and implement a long-term, cohesive strategy. We simply couldn’t have done what

eircom are sponsors of The Great Limerck Run

we have without eircom’s unwavering commitment. Our partnership means we can plan - knowing we have the resources and support to deliver our strategy something quite unique for any charity in Ireland, especially these days”. At its simplest, eircom supports Special Olympics Ireland in four principal ways; in a partnership that delivers national awareness and fundraising: n an annual financial contribution n technological support (in 1985 that was about landlines; today it’s about mobiles, high speed broadband, web support) n marketing support for initiatives throughout the year n employee engagement and volunteering eircom has the skills and the technology to help raise awareness of Special Olympic Ireland’s role and remit and carry out that role in the most efficient and costeffective way, to maximise

Chambers Ireland | CSR Awards 2014

008 CSR 2014_Eircom.indd 9

fundraising and call for volunteers countrywide. Special Olympics Ireland is committed to delivering services to athletes in its clubs all around the country, increasing its reach and athlete participation and developing activities for anyone with an intellectual disability. eircom helps Special Olympics Ireland do just that; providing financial support and encouraging and facilitating staff participation in volunteering and fundraising. The company also offers practical assistance through technological and logistics advice and support from eircom’s experts on the ground.

Is it working? According to Lennon, “most people don’t realise that Special Olympics Ireland is the strongest Special Olympics organisation in the world – something we should all be very proud of. We have significantly higher participation in Ireland, at 30 per cent, than any other country, which is remarkable.

“We know that our partnership benefits Special Olympics Ireland in many practical ways, including enhanced communication. People also don’t realise the scale of Special Olympics Ireland or its number of stakeholders: 9,355 athletes; 26,457 volunteers; 385 clubs, and 9,000 registered family members – not to mention supporters, media and the public. Our technology enables Special Olympics Ireland communicate effectively and efficiently - through the provision of high speed broadband, mobile phones, web support and by spreading the word, through eircom public awareness campaigns, customer bills, social media and through eircom’s employee base”. Lennon is convinced there are huge benefits to eircom too - as some 250 people from eircom got involved in a whole host of initiatives this year. “Like all successful partnerships”, Carolan concluded, “this works for both sides and together we are stronger.”

CSR Profile KPMG

Corporate Citizenship at KPMG

KPMG’s Get Cents personal finance programme continues to assist marginalised members of society in leading independent lives.

T

he ‘Get Cents’ programme was initially launched by KPMG in 2009, and has since grown from strength to strength. The core concept of Get Cents revolves around a small group providing handson engagement with marginalised members of society, focusing on money management, savings and budgeting. While programmes exist on a national scale targeting mainstream school students, Get Cents focuses its resources on disadvantaged groups, those typically forgotten by society, such as disadvantaged youths who have dropped out of school (North Wall Community Training Centre), homeless people (Depaul Ireland) and young people with disabilities (WALK). Since the beginning, the content of the programme has been revised to suit these three different audiences at the request of each community organisation, which lacked the resources to implement such programmes on their own.

Achieving Aims The programme’s aim is quite simple – ensuring that specific disadvantaged groups in society are equipped with the skills and knowledge which can help them in adapting their own personal situations, and giving them the opportunity to live independently. Clients from each of the three organisations attended three sessions to learn about the importance of money management, how to draw up a personal/household budget, management of bill payments, the need to save and the importance of shopping around, and more. In implementing this programme in each of the organisations, KPMG worked closely with each in a bid to understand their needs, before engaging KPMG staff to revise and adapt the Get Cents content to suit these needs. KPMG has continually encouraged staff members to become involved in the work of these organisations, and has allocated time off work for staff to participate in the programme, while also

KPMG strives to involve itself in projects which reflect its brand – Inspiring Confidence, Empowering Change – and which are embedded in the company’s corporate culture. 10

contributing financially in the form of a g50 completion voucher/prize bond for each successful programme participant.

Success The success of the Get Cents programme has been measured through feedback from clients who have completed the course, and from the experience of the three organisations KPMG has engaged with. For example, a baseline study was conducted of the WALK programme participants, done before

and after their engagement with Get Cents. The results found that 90 per cent of participants would now consider doing up a personal budget, all participants could now identify ‘wants’ versus ‘needs’, while 80 per cent of those who didn’t have a savings account resolved to open one. “WALK found ‘Get Cents’ to be an innovative and forward thinking programme that built on the skills and confidence of the individuals participating to manage their own money more effectively. At a time

when there have been significant cuts to the disability sector, it is more important than ever that we facilitate individuals to build on their independence and life skills, and the Get Cents programme has played a key part in doing just this,” said Sian Thompson, Rehabilitative Training Team Facilitator, WALK.

CSR at KPMG Of course, this programme is just one facet of a much wider CSR programme which has long been in place at KPMG, a programme which actively encourages employees to get out into the community and make a real difference. KPMG are keen to ensure their CSR initiatives constitute more than just philanthropy, but a substantial difference on the ground by harnessing the skills, experience and enthusiasm of their people. KPMG strives to involve itself in projects which reflect its brand. Inspiring confidence and empowering change are

embedded in the company’s corporate culture, and such encouragement can have a significant impact on disadvantaged groups in Ireland. The Get Cents programme with North Wall, Depaul and WALK is a great example of this involvement in action. With these three organisations KPMG has built a solid relationship, utilised the

Unique Partnerships KPMG has been successfully working with three very different organisations. n North Wall Community Training Centre – runs training programmes for early school leavers between 16-21. Programmes include painting and decorating, mechanic, retail, receptionist skills and more. n Depaul Ireland – helps people most in need in society, who are homeless and excluded. They provide support and opportunities to allow individuals to reach their potential. n WALK – a progressive service for adults with intellectual disabilities. They provide services to people with intellectual disabilities who are determined to lead self-determined lives in socially inclusive communities.

skills of KPMG staff and made a real difference in the lives of those who have participated in the programme. As a result, KPMG staff have played a fundamental role in ensuring the programme’s success. Over 90 staff have been involved in delivering the content and building relationships with people on the course. Staff have spoken of their enjoyment of working on this initiative; many have been touched by the personal stories they heard from clients, while other staff members have noted how involvement in the project has made a real impact on how clients will live independently in the future. The Get Cents programme has been running for the past five years now, and in the coming months KPMG plans to run more programmes. The company continues to evaluate where they can add value, and will

f key importance to Citi, and its wide ranging CSR programme, is intervention at critical decision making times in the lives of young schoolgoers. As such, Citi funds two innovative outreach programmes for access services at UCD and DCU, by way of funds from the Citi Foundation. The DCU Access Service provides support to students, schools and communities, currently underrepresented in third level education. The service aims to help all students realise their full potential, particularly those with no family history of third level education. Over 10,000 primary and secondary school students participate on DCU Access programmes each year. It also provides academic, professional and financial support to over 1,000 undergraduate and postgraduate Access students in DCU. At UCD, the Access Centre works to foster a university

environment which can attract students from a wide range of backgrounds, including those from socioeconomically disadvantaged communities, and those with a disability. The centre provides a range of academic and financial initiatives and supports on campus to ensure such students become independent learners and can enjoy a fuller experience. They also deliver outreach programmes to second level schools, community and voluntary organisations. “Citi has a number of focus areas for our philanthropic investments. One of those key pillars is around economic opportunities, and in this particular area we are looking to increase the number of low income students who receive adequate preparation skills and resources to generate or earn a sustainable income,” explains Tara O’Reilly, Public Affairs Officer at Citi. for DCU’s Guiding the Way Forward – a programme for second level students delivered by career guidance counsellors in schools, supported by DCU staff and students. The programme provides schools with additional resources to help students make informed decisions when choosing their subjects. It also provides additional support to students when choosing a course of study or career following second level education. According to Ita Tobin, Head of DCU Acess: “Simply put, without Citi this initiative would not have been possible. It is a unique programme which enables DCU to match its best resources to the needs of local schools. It also provides critical advice for parents and students on funding third level education.” At UCD, the Access Centre is working with Citi to deliver the Future You peer mentoring programme, which aims to improve the education and employment aspirations for young people in disadvantaged

areas in greater Dublin. This programme has three strands: the provision of mentoring (including a dedicated closed social media forum and academic support); a parental support programme; and a programme which develops the employment skills of the mentors through workshops, tailored plans and coaching. “The backing of the organisation from a financial point of view is very important,” says Fiona Sweeney, from UCD’s Access Centre. “Practically speaking, we wouldn’t be able to run such a wonderful programme without corporate sponsorship.” Such programmes fit neatly into the CSR policies in place at Citi, which include the Citi Volunteers programme. Citi employees volunteer their time teaching educational programmes in the classroom with Junior Achievement, mentoring students on the Career Academy programme and reading with children on the Time to Read initiative. Volunteers also teach older people how to use the internet with Age Action and young people how to code with Coderdojo. Employees also actively fundraise for the company’s charity of the year, the Irish Heart Foundation.

n a world where natural resources are becoming scarce, social issues are on the rise, and reputation has become a key factor for business, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a popular topic for discussion. For some, CSR is nothing more than a word which companies, of all shapes and sizes, ‘bandy about’ while for others it’s an opportunity to give back to society, engage staff in volunteer activities while making a real difference to local communities. Irish businesses are no strangers to CSR with many already engaged in CSR activities in their local communities. Whilst larger organisations such as DHL have dedicated CSR policies and strategies in place, not surprisingly, many small organisations don’t have a

‘formal’ CSR strategy. In saying that, CSR activities are widely recognised in Ireland through programmes such as Chambers Ireland’s Annual CSR Awards and not-forprofit networks such as Business in the Community Ireland (BITCI). In addition, studies show that organisations with responsible business strategies tend to demonstrate a better financial performance than less sustainable competitors. Indeed this latter point was reinforced in April of this year, when Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton launched ‘Good for Business, Good for the Community’, Ireland’s National Plan on Corporate Social Responsibility 2014-2016. One of the Government’s key objectives

Chambers Ireland | CSR Awards 2014

013 CSR 2014_DHL.indd 13

Looking at CSR and ’Best Practices’ it’s clear the CSR strategy implemented by Deutsche Post DHL is an excellent example of an organisation that has embedded CSR into the very fabric of the organisation with employees embracing the spirit of volunteerism. Indeed, business success and social responsibility is part of our core business strategy as well as key metrics in the Deutsche Post DHL Group’s Strategy 2015. The aim of this strategy is for Deutsche Post DHL to become the employer, provider and investor of choice. Our guiding principle of ‘Respect and Results’ illustrates this point. We can only become truly successful by producing good business results while adequately respecting the needs of society. To this end, DHL’s corporate social responsibility programme, ‘Living Responsibility’ is an essential part of our business strategy. For DHL Express Ireland,

CSR and volunteerism has always been at the heart of our operation with a prominent culture of social responsibility and a long tradition of volunteering. Over the years, volunteers have initiated, supported and raised funds for many local projects. Last year, a team of eight amateur cyclists and a support crew, participated in ‘Race Around Ireland’, widely recognised as Europe’s most challenging endurance event, to raise money for charity while Bernard McCarthy, Managing Director, DHL Express Ireland, scaled Mouth Kilimanjaro. Furthermore, the entire DHL Express Ireland Board of Directors embarked on ‘The Four Peaks Challenge’, not forgetting their recent acceptance of the ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’, with all proceeds going to the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. In closing, while it’s clear CSR is good for business and good for the community, it’s also good for instilling a spirit of long-term volunteerism, engagement and a sense of community spirit among volunteers. But it’s also much more than that, it’s about giving back to the community in a successful business and socially responsible way.

Opening doors for Homeless People Peter McVerry Trust works tirelessly to aid the marginalised and the disadvantaged in Irish society.

A

t Peter McVerry Trust, an average day can range from giving somebody a cup of tea and a warm place to rest to providing a place that someone can call their home. Regardless of how we help we treat each and every one of the 3,500 people that come into our services each year with dignity and respect. Since we were first established in 1983 by Fr Peter McVerry to tackle homelessness, the charity has helped thousands of young people on the margins of Irish society. Today, Peter McVerry Trust continues to tackle homelessness, drug misuse and social disadvantage by providing low threshold services to individuals with complex needs.

Children and Young People As a specialist in providing residential support and care to children who are out-of-home, Peter McVerry Trust operates four U18s residential services

in Dublin that cater for children from Dublin and the northern region. As part of our continuum of care model we also provide young adults with aftercare support. This ensures that when they exit children’s services they receive all necessary support from our specialised staff. In 2013 we supported 59 children and young adults in our U18s services; the youngest of which was just 13 years of age. We are now working to open the first ever youth café for homeless children in Ireland that will provide a safe haven and additional activities outside of normal hours to vulnerable teenagers and young adults. The vast majority of those that Peter McVerry Trust works with are young people. Last year 66 per cent of the people accessing our services were young men aged 35 or under. These are young people who receive support from Peter McVerry Trust not just around homelessness and housing, but also in areas

we believe that everyone has the right to a home and we actively work to achieve that by campaigning on the issue. Chambers Ireland | CSR Awards 2014

such as drug use, family and mental health.

Ultimately our objective is to eliminate homelessness, not just manage it. At Peter McVerry Trust we believe that everyone has the right to a home and we actively work to achieve that by campaigning on the issue. We also work to assist as many people as possible to secure a home through our Housing First Team, a team that includes dedicated accommodation finders and support staff who help people to find and sustain tenancies and re-integrate people into our society.

Preventing Homelessness

Support

In recent years we have seen a steady flow of people into homeless services, including more families and couples. We have responded to those needs by providing homes and dedicated services to these groups in addition to our traditional client group. We have also sought to increase our efforts to prevent homelessness. We provide two dedicated prevention services, one of which also houses Fr McVerry’s office. In addition to dedicated prevention teams we also provide targeted educational supports to students in vulnerable areas, helping them to achieve their full potential and avoid homelessness.

Everything that we do is heavily reliant on the support we receive from businesses, community groups and individuals across Ireland. While we receive some funding to operate homeless services, some of the most essential services that we operate receive little or no funding from the State. In order to operate those services we organise a wide range of events and appeals such as the Opening Doors Campaign around World Homeless Day and our Corporate Christmas Appeal. If you’d like to support our work or discover more about us check out our website at ww.pmvtrust.ie or call 01 823 0776. Thank You.

The company wants thousands of children, affected by cancer and other serious illness, to experience the magic of Barretstown and enjoy being a child again. This money goes towards supporting Barretstown’s goal to rebuild the lives of these children, and their families, through a life changing therapeutic recreation programme in a safe, fun and supportive environment. It is a break from hospitals, white coats and medical treatment and a chance for sick children to be children again: to have fun, to make new friends and create new memories – all within the beautiful and magical setting of Barretstown Castle in the Kildare countryside. A variety of fundraising initiatives took place over the last twelve months including the Bake-Off for Barretstown, an in-store promotion that saw 20 cent of every f1 spent in the bakery section donated to Barretstown. There have also been a myriad of fundraising activities in each store, led by Lidl employee

In September 2013 Lidl Ireland and the Crosscare Dublin Food Bank – Ireland’s only established food bank – announced details of a partnership launching Ireland’s first mobile food bank. The mobile food bank collects surplus food and non-food product on a daily basis from each of the participating Lidl stores in Ballyfermot; Pottery Road; Clondalkin; Walkinstown; Greenhills; Nutgrove; Stillorgan and Rathfarnham and distributes the product initially to the 70 charities working with those most in need, based in each of the localities. The remaining food is returned to the three Crosscare Community cafés catering for over 600 people on a daily basis and via a meals-on-wheels service for those housebound. As well as the surplus food product, Lidl provides a refrigerated van;

motor insurance and the required fuel with Crosscare manning the service with a team of trained volunteers. Over 10 per cent of people in Ireland are affected by food poverty, which means that they simply cannot afford to provide themselves and their families with the recommended daily amounts of food. People finding themselves at risk of food poverty include those living alone; families on low incomes; single parents and families with three or more children. Established over seventy years ago and running the food bank for over thirty years, Crosscare diverts over 550 tonnes of food from landfill and the new partnership with Lidl will result in an additional 300 tonnes of food being redistributed via their network to those most in need, almost doubling the waste saved from landfill. CSR Profile IPB

Inclusion is Key IPB’s Youth and Community Fund has been promoting social inclusion via community projects throughout Ireland.

E

thical business is at the heart of everything IPB does – part of the company’s mission statement is to put society at the heart of their goals. IPB believes that community-centred sharing is the future, and aim to set a new standard of community relations, for both themselves, and other companies. In 2012, the company set about creating a framework for their Corporate Social Engagement (CSE) model, identifying five keys areas for support. To this end, a €1 million fund for youth and community was created the following year with the goal of supporting local comunity initiatives. The fund particularly focused on increasing community participation and promoting social inclusion, and it is expected that a further €1 million will be awarded later this year. Today, the Fund’s aim is to see these 2014 initiatives continue to flourish, and for IPB to become a catalyst for change in how companies think and act in relation to their commitment to society.

Programmes of Promotion Projects were submitted by those who identified needs in their community, and recognised how much of a difference could be made with this new opportunity of funding. IPB’s assessment criteria specifically requested projects which will have a direct benefit to the local community, such as the provision of opportunities for people to engage in programmes promoting social inclusion, local business integration through community partnerships, physical/ mental health and wellbeing programmes and tackling issues such as isolation and loneliness of the aged community. The Fund was open to all local community and voluntary groups, clubs/associations and not-for-profit or charitable associations operating locally within the Republic of Ireland. In 2014, an unprecedented 1,987 submissions were lodged, with successful applicants feeling the benefits of IPB’s assistance. “We are delighted that this fund exists to assist

community groups in the good work they do. It was an unexpected bonus to have funds available when we least expected them. We have ambitious plans for our club, but little resources. So thank you very much, as the timing could not have been better,” said one member of Kilbeggan schoolboys and girls soccer club. Applications are processed via continued volunteerism on the part of IPB employees, who donated over 300 hours of extra curricular time in January 2014 in assisting in the evaluation process.

The Wider Picture The €1 million allocated for the Youth and Community Fund is only one part of IPB’s wider CSR agenda. Social dividends totalling €8 million have been committed by IPB since 2012, making the company one of the country’s largest corporate donors. A social dividend is allocated on an annual basis in support of the company’s Corporate Social Engagement (CSE) Framework. Recent CSR initiatives undertaken

The Youth and Community Fund has been a huge success thus far, however IPB view this as just the beginning. By funding such programmes and organisations, IPB is hopeful that other companies will take heed of their actions, and seek to emulate them.

by IPB have included a 50:50 funding partnership with the Government in creating the €2 million IPB Gathering Ireland Fund - for local community and regional flagship events. A tripartite partnership, SportNation was formed with the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, which will see the investment of €3 million in sporting facilities across the country. They also support a number of other projects that fall under one of the themes of IPB’s CSE Framework: Diaspora, Community, Sport, Education and Business Innovation. One such example is Fighting Words, a creative writing centre co-founded by Roddy Doyle and Séan Love, which will result in greater access both regionally and in terms of numbers. The Youth and Community Fund has been a huge success thus far, however IPB view this as just the beginning. By funding such programmes and organisations, IPB is hopeful that other companies will follow their example. “By our actions, we also want other businesses to be more aware of corporate responsibility,” CEO Ronan Foley said. “IPB is confident that there is significant momentum and a solid foundation from which to build on.”

or over 18 years, Boots Ireland has used its pharmacyled expertise and support to help improve the health and well-being of local communities across the country. Our aim is for customers to view us as a business that puts something back into the community through our charity partnerships, our knowledgeable healthcare advisors and the dedication

of all our Boots colleagues. In 2012 Boots Ireland were delighted to announce the Irish Cancer Society as their charity partner. The aim of the partnership is to support people living with cancer in Ireland and to increase awareness, promote prevention and raise vital funds to support the Irish Cancer Society night nursing service. From the outset it has always been important to us that our

partnership allows us to use our healthcare expertise to develop cancer support services for our customers and their families, thereby creating a legacy for customer and patient care. In particular, our No7 beauty consultants are being trained to deliver post cancer treatment make up skills and we are developing a programme to enable our pharmacists to provide cancer guidance and

The initiative was a free nationwide road show, chaired by George Hook and attended by 1,000 people in five locations. The events debated four key themes. Their first theme was ‘Home Security’ with An Garda Siochána. The second, ‘the Impact of Austerity on Older People’ with Age Action, Alone and the Association of Retired Public Service Organisations. The third was ‘Homecare & Healthcare’ with Home & Community Care Ireland, Institute of Public Health Nursing and a consultant geriatrician. Dell Ireland, as the lead partner with the Irish Cancer Society on Daffodil Day, created a high stakes communications campaign, Spread the Word for Daffodil Day, seeking to heighten awareness of the campaign. Dell was a true partner to the campaign, with employees having volunteered their time and skills to ensure the success of Daffodil Day in 2014, and the communications effort aimed to broaden awareness of the extent of the employees’ impact. Through the communications programme 1,707 traditional media hits were secured, with thousands of posts and likes through social media channels and over 750 downloads of the app. Dell.ie

Intel has built positive and constructive relations within the community and beyond by maintaining an open dialogue with their stakeholders. They have communicated their social and environmental goals and activities, events, new investments and more — the goal being to include stakeholders in the management of change and the achievement of social, economic and environmental objectives. Intel has established different communication methods that are tailored to the needs of their stakeholders which they have defined under two categories; those internal to Intel and those external. Intel used a variety of online, face-to-face and print platforms for their internal and external audiences. Intel.ie

Zambia Project

The Consultancy for Change Volunteering Trip

The Zambia Project was designed to raise standards of living in rural regions of Zambia. The project has renovated a dilapidated rural medical clinic servicing a population of 5,700 into a leading rural clinic. Electricity and running water were provided; sanitation facilities and a maternity ward were also constructed. Farmers were educated in better farming practices, along with the introduction of rice farming. Their current chapter is to build radio schools to provide a governmentapproved curriculum to children who cannot attend formal schools. Funding has also been provided to local schools, an infant-feeding programme, a biogas initiative and an orphanage. Arthurcox.com

The Deloitte Nurture Africa Consultancy for Change Volunteering trip included a two week volunteering placement with Nurture Africa in Nansana, Uganda, where 17 staff from Deloitte travelled as part of a 44 member volunteer group. The mission was to nurture the physical and emotional development of children in Uganda who are infected with or affected by HIV, by providing access to healthcare and education. Staff put their professional skills to use by helping to upskill local people with computer programmes, by giving financial advice and by helping out with strategic advice, planning for grant applications and forming policies. There has been a 90 per cent thermal energy improvement, a thermal efficiency upgrade of local community assets, and construction of an ecological park adding environmental and biodiversity value. Dawnmeats.ie

Through the joint effort between ESB Trading and the Ardnacrusha operations department, the Ardnacrusha Station Sustainable Generation Initiative was devised. This initiative changed the way Ardnacrusha operated their four generating units, thereby improving its performance and positively impacting ESB’s renewable energy output. The station now runs at maximum load for over 90 per cent of the time. Prior to the initiative, units were being run at a minimum load for 50-60 per cent of the time. Today 99.3 per cent of energy is traded. This maximisation of load running has increased station efficiency and has lead to environmental benefits. Esb.ie

ABBVIE IRELAND

Abbott Ireland’s Waste, Water & Energy Programme (2009-2013)

AbbVie Ireland Operations – Reducing, Reusing and Recycling

Safeguarding the environment is a key strategic priority for Abbott which is led by their Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) teams. The EHS teams across Abbott sites lead projects that positively impact business, communities and employees. Abbott has developed a comprehensive management and governance system which integrates environmental considerations into their day-to-day planning and business processes. By 2013, all six manufacturing sites in Ireland had achieved Zero Waste to Landfill status. Some sites changed cooling towers, installed ecoflow cisterns, introduced rain water harvesting and undertook leak surveys. They continue to seek additional reductions in water, waste and energy. Abbott.ie

AbbVie’s environmental health initiatives in Cork and Sligo are based on the three principles of reduce, reuse and recycle. The AbbVie Sligo facility’s installation of an oil to gas system and heat recovery unit saw an annual saving of $94 million and an annual reduction of 266 tonnes of CO2. AbbVie’s Cork facility collected and diverted end of life plastic for fuel recovery into synthetic fuels that are cleaner and low in sulphur. The plant also introduced a new waste wooden packaging collection service, diverting all waste for reuse, rather than recycling alone. The site directs zero waste to landfill. Abbott.ie

Launched in 2010, Brewing a Better Future is a comprehensive and integrated sustainability strategy by Heineken that focuses on four key areas: protecting water resources, reducing CO2 emissions, sourcing sustainably and advocating responsible consumption. The initial three year plan from 2010 - 2013 saw the achievement of environmental targets in reducing energy and water levels by 15 per cent across the brewing facility. In 2012, Heineken Ireland was one of only three operating companies in Heineken’s worldwide network to meet their targets across all aspects of the programme. A success the company has repeated in 2013. Heineken.ie

Introducing Wall Street to the Classroom

The BCP Staff Volunteering Programme is a programme which runs every quarter whereby BCP staff nominate a charity. BCP staff then volunteer their time to help in any way that the charity feels is beneficial. Their first project involved cooking dinner for the families of the Ronald McDonald House. The charity was nominated by a staff member who had family using the facility. The staff provided dinner for 40 people and donated over 200 to the hospice. This quarter’s chosen charities nominated by the BCP staff include a tree planting and literacy programmes. Bcp.ie

Introducing Wall Street to the Classroom was an eight week Transition Year module which armed students with an introductory knowledge of navigating and investing in the stock market. Hayes Culleton developed the instructional design, presentation slides, teachers’ notes, blog posts, a suite of videos, and suggestions as to how to dovetail the content with Leaving Cert subjects and a set of useful links and multimedia as the materials. Hayes Culleton delivered in-services to teachers as well as to undergraduate students in UL. The module is now taught in Transition Year across Ireland. Hayesculleton.com

Abbott Ireland & Junior Achievement Partnership – Supporting Schools in the Community

The Great BT Charity Shops Challenge

For the past 11 years, Abbott Ireland has partnered with Junior Achievement Ireland to deliver education programmes in the classroom for students aged 6-18 years to complement and support the formal education system. To date over 500 Abbott employees have mentored more than 14,600 children in over 100 schools in local communities, with an emphasis on schools that are designated as disadvantaged. Each employee volunteer is required to undergo training and 10-15 hours of volunteering to deliver programmes during each academic year. The course content, materials and pedagogy engage the volunteers with students to share their passion for education. Abbott.ie

In October 2013, over 170 BT volunteers took part in the first BT Charity Shops Challenge. Employees stepped out of their jobs to ‘take over’ 17 charity shops (ten Irish Cancer Society shops in the Republic of Ireland and seven Marie Curie shops in Northern Ireland) to help raise funds for both charities. Teams competed against each other, using planning, marketing and selling skills to generate extra stock, raise the profile of the shops locally, attract more volunteers and customers and generate the biggest increase in shop-takings on the day. A total of s100,000 was raised for the two charities. Btireland.ie
